What is an Optometrist?

When you step into a Vision Space centre, you can rest assure that we have among the highest number of qualified optometrists to look into your needs. Optometrists are the main providers of vision care as well as eye care. They are graduates with bachelor degrees from universities.

An optometrist examines people’s eyes to diagnose vision problems, such as short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism, they test patients’ depth and color perception and ability to focus and coordinate the eyes. Optometrists may prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses, or they may provide other treatments, such as vision therapy or low-vision rehabilitation.

Optometrists are also qualified to diagnose diseases like cataract, glaucoma, infections and conditions caused by systemic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure, referring patients to other health practitioners as needed. Like other physicians, optometrists encourage preventative measures by promoting nutrition and hygiene education to their patients to minimize the risk of eye disease.

Optometrists are one of three eye care professionals, the others being ophthalmologists (medical doctors), and opticians.
