Eye Screening & Vision Care Collaboration with Taarana School, Petaling Jaya
At Vision Space Optometrist, we are committed to providing inclusive eye care for all children, especially children with special needs, who may not be able to recognise or communicate what clear and proper vision should be like.
Recently, our team had the honour of visiting Taarana School, Petaling Jaya, to conduct a dedicated eye screening programme for their special needs students. This initiative was designed not only to identify potential vision concerns early, but also to support the children through a co-management approach involving teachers, parents, and our optometrists.
Children with special needs often do not realise that their vision may be unclear, as they may have never experienced what good vision truly feels like. During the screening, we used gentle, child-friendly, and adapted assessment methods to evaluate their visual responses, eye coordination, and overall visual behaviour in a comfortable and supportive environment.
In addition to the screenings, we also conducted a simple and engaging eye care talk with the children, teaching them how to take care of their eyes in ways they could understand. This included basic habits such as resting their eyes, maintaining good viewing distance, and protecting their eyes during daily activities.
To ensure ongoing support beyond the screening day, we provided a briefing to the teachers, sharing key signs and behaviours to observe in the classroom that may indicate potential vision problems, such as:
- Difficulty focusing or maintaining attention
- Abnormal head posture or eye movements
- Avoidance of visual tasks
- Changes in learning behaviour
We also advised parents on the importance of bringing their children for regular comprehensive eye examinations, especially if any unusual signs are noticed. Early detection and timely intervention can make a significant difference in a child’s learning experience, comfort, and quality of life.
As part of this collaboration, we were proud to officially sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Taarana School, marking a shared commitment to the long-term eye care and visual wellbeing of their students.
